It’s that time of the year that most of us love! Summer Holidays! With the holidays comes a lot of family’s travelling long distances to visit family or for a holiday at the sea.
Every year we read about all the fatalities on our roads mostly caused by irresponsible drivers. Motor vehicle accidents can be avoided by staying awake, staying alert and following the rules of the road.
We’ve come up with a few pointers to follow when travelling on our roads. Take these tips seriously, you could avoid an accident and even death.
- Before your trip check your vehicles tire tread depth, tire pressures and engine & brake oil condition. If your car is due for a service then make sure that it is done before your trip.
- Before you start your long trip, ensure that you’re well-rested. Don’t rely on caffeinated drinks to keep you awake as they only last for a short period of time.
- Instead of drinking caffeinated drinks to keep you awake, rather drink cold water. Water naturally refreshes the body and makes you feel good.
- Stop every 2 hours or 200km. Get out your vehicle, stretch and go for a walk.
- During your breaks don’t have heavy meals as this tends to make you tired. Rather have snacks and small meals.
- If you pull your vehicle off the road, make sure that you pull off safely. Never park on the shoulder or in the emergency lane excepting if it is an actual emergency of course.
- Always stick to the speed limit. They are implemented for your safety.
- Make sure that you and the occupants of your vehicle are wearing their safety belts.
We wish you all the best for the festive season. Enjoy your holiday and travel safe!
